Frequently Asked Questions
Why choose our care?
We support low risk, healthy women in physiologic labor and birth. We do not perform services that increase your risk for complications and interventions. Induction, continuous fetal monitoring, confinement to bed, and pain medications are all part of a cascade of interventions that can increase risk of fetal distress leading to cesarean. Holistic care begins with your first visit and continues throughout your pregnancy with tailored care. Our focus is on the prevention of problems through nutritional support, exercise, natural and herbal recommendations and utilizing allopathic resources as needed. Birth, breastfeeding and recovery are all better when women are prepared, confident and well-supported! We complete risk assessments to best serve you throughout care and have relationships with collaborative providers.

What does an appointment look like?
All appointments are 30-60 minutes. This allows us to develop a trusting relationship with each other. Most of the appointment will be spent supporting you by answering questions, tailoring your pregnancy and birth plans and providing resources. We provide all routine care and lab work at Swiss Avenue Birth and Wellness.
What is midwifery care?
Midwives have been the care provider of choice for thousands of years. Midwives are perhaps the oldest profession. We support women in having a safe, physiologic birth by providing health care in pregnancy and labor, honoring you and your partners beliefs and choices.
Who can have midwifery care?
Midwifery care is an appropriate choice for healthy, low risk women. We also offer collaborative care for those who need to consult with another provider.
When do you start care?
We start seeing you at 6-8 weeks for prenatal care. We also offer preconception appointments.
Do you support vaginal birth after c-section?
Studies show that women and infants both benefit from a trial of labor. VBAC is a safe option in most cases. We have supported many women in successful VBACs and would love to help you navigate the benefits and minimal risks.
Do I need an OB as well?
If your pregnancy is low risk, all care can be provided by your midwife. We are your care provider.
Do you call in prescriptions?
We have a collaborative relationship with an MD so we are able to call in prescriptions for common complaints of pregnancy and postpartum, if needed. If you need additional care, we have comprehensive referral resources. Most complaints can be well supported or prevented with nutrition, supplements, diet and exercise.
What happens in an emergency?
Midwives are skilled providers and trained to detect and manage most birth complications. We will discreetly tuck away all necessary equipment such as oxygen, IV therapy, and medications. Most pregnancies that should not be managed out of the hospital, those at home or a birth center (statistically the same), have early warning signs which permit ample time to transport to the hospital. In the event of an emergency we will make appropriate transfers. We believe in collaborative care and have relationships with area doctors, Baylor Dallas Labor and Delivery, as well as Baylor Dallas NICU. We routinely do drills and training with Baylor Dallas and Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
Amy has supported over 600 women in labor and delivered over 300 babies. Our transfer rate is less than 5% (emergent is about 1%) and the C-section rate when transferred is less than 5%. Hospitals in the DFW area have an overall C/S rate of over 33%. Many often used interventions can lead to operative birth that may have been avoided in midwifery care.
Have you had a natural/unmedicated birth?
Amy had 4 natural births and Brittney had 2. We have both had home births and midwifery care. We think it is invaluable to be able to relate to each of you in our care.
Do you accept insurance?
We do not submit billing to your insurance, but are happy to provide a superbill at the conclusion of care. We can make no guarantees, but you may be able to recoup some or most of the cost of care by self submitting to your insurance provider.
We also work with a company called Birth Professional Billing who is able to help create an itemized receipt and many of our clients have received refunds. We do accept HSA cards and will help submit to Health shares and wait for their payment. We also offer financing through United Medical Credit (based on eligibility).
*Should your insurance company choose to discount our midwifery fee to their customary rate and/or decide not to cover our midwifery fees at all, no refund will be given.
Do you provide Lactation support?
Amy is a trained Lactation Counselor, and has provided professional and peer to peer support and has breastfed her 4 babies. We will support you with your first latch and provide basic lactation support. If you need additional support, we have an IBCLC on call.
